Iconoclastically Yours

DUAL is bringing the outside in. "I'm striving really hard to make people feel like they're walking on the streets of Houston when they enter the gallery," he says in an e-mail. The local graffiti artist (who prefers to go by his all-caps moniker) renovated the Aerosol Warfare Gallery for his show "Iconoclastically Yours." "[It] will be transformed into a concrete jungle, consisting of street signs, painted walls, canvases, found items and television sets all tied together," DUAL says. Hung in this life-sized diorama will be DUAL's posters, which Houstonians usually see wheat-pasted to buildings, electrical boxes and billboards. His most common works feature either the Virgin Mary riding a bike, inventor Nikola Tesla or a pocket watch with the letters of his name replacing the 3, 6, 9, and 12 slots. "Pretty simple why I chose [the clock]," DUAL says. "Time stops for no one. The clock is an everyday reminder to myself that we're only getting older and if you wanna get shit done, gotta do it NOW."

The show will feature posters as well as DUAL's paintings on canvas. "I have concentrated a lot of time on paintings more than prints for this show," he says. "I figure people see the prints on the streets every day but don't really get to experience much of my other work. So I'm taking advantage of that."
