18th Annual Houston International Jazz Festival

Ruben Studdard, Hiroshima and the “Sax Pack” head up Bubba Thomas’s yearly ode to all things jazz

By Bob Ruggiero

Published on July 31, 2008

We’re not quite sure what the vocal stylings of American Idol winner Ruben Studdard have in common with Al Jarreau or Joe Williams, but Studdard’s one of the headliners for the 18th Annual Houston International Jazz Festival. The Velvet Teddy Bear performs on Saturday, as do the Angel Lane Brass Band and the Summer Jazz Workshop All-Stars. Fusion fans can turn east for inspiration on Sunday for headliners Hiroshima (who often integrate traditional Japanese instruments with R&B, pop and jazz) and the “Sax Pack” of Steve Cole, Jeff Kashiwa and Kim Waters. 5 p.m. Discovery Green, 1002 Avenida de las Americas. For information, call 713-839-7000 or visit www.jazzeducation.org. $20 to $35.
Sat., Aug. 2, 4 p.m.; Sun., Aug. 3, 4 p.m., 2008
